DNA Testing Focus of January Beef Farmers Meetings
New technologies are constantly appearing in the agricultural business sector. For beef farmers some of the latest technology is DNA testing for genes that contribute to a particular trait of interest. These traits may include meat tenderness, feed efficiency, and others. The Seneca County Beef Farmers Discussion Group would like to invite farmers from the beef community to two upcoming January meetings, Thursday January 8th and 15th. The group will be hosting a representative from Bovigen the first night and Igenity the second, two companies responsible for some of the DNA testing currently going on in the marketplace. These representatives will be presenting and discussing with the group the products available to the farmer as well as how to interpret the results these products offer. It is recommended to those interested in attending that a few minutes be spent at the company websites in advance of the meetings. Not to worry if you are unable to do so as this is not mandatory for participation. Farmers may attend one or both of the meetings. Visit the websites at www.bovigen.com and www.igenity.com.
The first meeting will take place January 8, 2009 at 6:00 PM, The Ovid
Barn, Anne St, Ovid, NY. This is a green and white pole barn on the
edge of the Village of Ovid. This is a dinner meeting and those attending
must bring a dish to pass. The main course will be provided. Mandatory
pre-registration can be done by calling Julia at Cornell Cooperative
Extension of Seneca County (315) 539 9251. This is important so that
accommodations can be made for everyone. Reservation deadline is January
7th, 2009.
The second meeting will take place on January 15, 2009 at 6:00 PM same
location as the first. There will be a $5 registration fee to offset
a pizza and sides dinner cost. Again pre-registration is a must in order
to ensure food and materials for all those in attendance. Reservation
deadline is January 14th, 2009. See contact information above. Any questions
outside of registration please contact Mike Dennis at the number above.
Directions to The Ovid Barn: From NYS Thruway Exit 41. Follow Route 414 south to Route 96/414; follow this south into the Village of Ovid. At the four corners continue south (straight) on Route 96A/414 south into the village. Make a right turn (west) onto County Rd 132 (South Street), at the edge of the village, and take the first right (north) onto Ann Street. The Ovid Barn will be on your left.
Come join the Seneca Beef Producers Discussion Group and see if DNA
testing may be a useful tool on your farm.
